[ Maybe none of his business. He's certain she'll have no problem telling him so if it isn't. But if it has her rattled, and if apparently her rattling has Kieran rattled somewhat as well, he'd like to know. Maybe he'd also like to make a joke about it. He's found nothing unrattles rattled people quite as much as wanting to strangle him. ]

My mother...tell me, do you find her silence odd in this time? Perhaps had the Herald lived she might have come as she did with the Hero, the Champion, yet she has not. I know her, Alistair, and here we all are now in Kirkwall. The shaman told me to go back and there are those who know what the Dalish clans do not. [Even for Morrigan this is quiet, and comes after she's gone to check who might be listening at the door. (Was there a time when she wasn't so paranoid? Does it end when it comes to this?)] Wardens have their secrets, part of this is mine.

Clearly what we need to do, [ he says instead of pushing, ] is round up everyone potentially important and get the cornered by darkspawn with no hope of surviving. That seems to be what draws her out.

[That's an Alistair Warden secret, he gets to have extra secrets. Unrelated to whatever the rest of the rabble have festering away in their internal Warden Blight Sacs of Wardenly Woe. Same as witches get to have secrets tucked in their impractical bodices.]

If only you had come to that idea sooner, say before the Winter Palace debacle, how simpler a night that might have been. [Instead of lugging some Orlesian lady through Red Templar gauntlets that ended with Alan trying to prise red lyrium out of his hand with his teeth.] One of your Wardens did tell me something useful, it's put a piece in place, and going back-- there are things I overlooked. That I might not have wished to see.

I want him to be happy, Alistair, happier than I was. [Than you were, she's kind enough not to add though those early years can't have been spectacular for him.] To be safe. Once I know-- I believe I will be safer for the knowing.
